              1. <lido:descriptiveNoteValue xml:lang="en">This work is signed by the painter from Crete, who arrived in Venice in 1567 and immediately became Titian's pupil. It was painted in 1571-1572 when El Greco, having become a member of the Accademia di San Luca, was perfectly at home in the Farnese Court, thanks to the influence of his patron Giulio Clovio. It was the latter, a famous Croatian illuminator in the service of the Farnese family from 1539, who is portrayed in the Capodimonte canvas. The man, in his seventies, is holding his best-known work, the "Book of Hours", now housed in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. The painting is heavily influenced by late Titian and late Bassano in its chromatic impasto, stormy landscape and free rendering of illuminated pages.</lido:descriptiveNoteValue>
